Bonded Samarium Cobalt is the highest grade of material that can either be made by using nylon 12 or compression molded using epoxy. It was developed by Seiko Epson Corporation and can be made radial up to 15 Mgoe, cross field up to 17 Mgoe, and axially by similar method for 15 Mgoe. Typically used in high quality stepping motors, this material has been in the market place for over 20 years and MPCO has yet to have a reject of any kind.
Injection Molded Samarium Cobalt Bonded Magnets can be made by combining SmCo powders with Nylon 6, Nylon 12, PPS and other resins. The ratios between magnetic powders and resins are endless, therefore many grades exist depending on magnetic performance, temperature resistance, and mechanical strength. These materials can be molded directly over or into another polymer or metal component. The shapes and sizes are endless, as are the magnetization patterns that can be achieved either in the molding tool or by utilizing a magnetizing fixture. The following tables list several common grades, however we have the capability to formulate any desired grade of magnetic material based on customer specified parameters.
Due to different manufacturing processes these materials (excepting C1) are sourced off-shore for the convenience of our customers. Secondary operations (ie. machining, magnetizing and inspection) are performed here. Ceramic/Bonded are least strong of these grades, of the rare earth magnets, NIB is strongest while SmCo has better temperature characteristics. AlNiCo has the best temperature characteristics, although is less strong than rare earths and is easily de-magnetized.
MPCO offers both compression bonded 1:5, and 2:17 SmCo magnets. They have lower energy products than sintered SmCo – currently in the range of 4.0 to 10.0 MGOe. Polymer samarium cobalt magnets with SmCo magnetic powder mixed with polymer materials, compressing through the shaped die, various shapes of high dimensional accuracy can be produced, requiring no further finish machining. Due to excellent corrosion resistance, coating is not required.
