Magnet Can Cure Eye Tremor
Recently, an article published in Ophthalmology magazine introduced a case of magnetic implants for the treatment of nystagmus, the first report of the use of implants to control eye movements.
Researchers at the University of London and Oxford have implanted a magnetic device into the eye and successfully cured a 40-year-old man with nystagmus. The specific method is to implant the magnet into the bottom of the eyelid and suture another magnet to the extraocular muscle that controls the movement of the eyeball. Since the force of the magnet is just right, the magnet can control the involuntary movement of the eyeball without excessively affecting the normal autonomous movement of the eyeball.
Post-implantation tests showed that the patient had a good improvement in vision and did not have a negative impact on their normal function. The four-year follow-up showed that the patient’s daily life was significantly improved and a job was found.
Nystagmus (NY), referred to as nystagmus, is an involuntary, rhythmic, reciprocating eye movement. According to Dr. Parashkev Nachev, the author of the article, nystagmus is even more destructive to everyday life than diseases such as macular degeneration. A variety of neurological problems can cause involuntary tremors in the eye, which makes it difficult to treat. The current drug therapy is not stable enough, often effective in this person, but may be ineffective in others, and drug therapy has many side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness and so on. Surgical therapy also has its problems, mainly because it is difficult to suppress the involuntary movement of the eye without affecting its normal movement.
The magnets used in the study were wrapped in titanium, a high-quality material that is widely used in a variety of implants with virtually no adverse reactions. Prior to human testing, the researchers first tested the device in vitro using custom contact lenses. The results showed that the implant could greatly reduce or even stop the involuntary vibration of the eye.
